Chapter 5 - The Test Subject

The sheer evil of Cassandra’s plan made Naomi physically sick to her stomach.

Cassandra was poisoning a four-year-old child and then administering the antidote just to record the biological data for her black-market buyers.

Naomi knew that if Cassandra felt threatened by the police investigation, she would try to silence Toby permanently.

She had to get back inside the hospital immediately, despite being banned by the medical director.

Naomi drove to a nearby medical supply store and purchased a generic set of blue nursing scrubs.

She tied her hair back into a tight bun, put on a disposable surgical mask, and placed a pair of thick reading glasses over her eyes.

The disguise was simple, but it was enough to blend in with the chaotic night shift staff.

She slipped through the hospital’s loading dock doors and navigated the service elevators up to the pediatric floor.

The hallways were quiet, illuminated only by the soft glow of the nurses' station computers.

Naomi crept carefully toward Toby’s private intensive care room.

She peeked through the blinds and saw Elijah sleeping exhaustedly on a small sofa in the corner of the room.

Cassandra was standing out in the hallway near the emergency stairwell, whispering furiously into her cell phone.

Naomi pressed herself against the wall, listening intently to the hushed conversation.

"I do not care about the clinical data anymore, the independent lab is going to ruin everything!" Cassandra hissed into the phone.

There was a brief pause as she listened to the person on the other end of the line.

"The boy is completely useless to us now," Cassandra commanded with terrifying coldness.

"Get in there and give him the final, fatal dose tonight before Elijah wakes up."

Naomi’s blood ran cold as she realized Cassandra was not acting alone.

Someone else inside the hospital was helping her execute the murder of an innocent child.

Cassandra hung up the phone and walked quickly toward the restrooms.

Naomi heard the heavy door of the emergency stairwell click open just a few feet away.

A tall man wearing a white doctor’s coat stepped out of the stairwell, holding a large, loaded syringe in his gloved hand.
