Chapter 6 - The Midnight Code
Naomi recognized the man immediately, even in the dim light of the hallway.
It was Doctor Harrison, the hospital’s medical director.
He was the inside contact helping Cassandra falsify records and test the illegal drugs on hospital grounds.
Doctor Harrison walked quietly into Toby’s room, keeping his eyes fixed on the sleeping child.
Naomi did not hesitate for a single second.
She charged into the room right behind him, tackling the medical director from behind.
Doctor Harrison grunted in surprise as they both crashed hard onto the linoleum floor.
The syringe skittered across the room, rolling safely beneath the child’s hospital bed.
"Security!" Doctor Harrison shouted, struggling to push Naomi off his back.
Naomi grabbed him by the collar of his white coat, pinning him down with all her strength.
"You are a monster!" Naomi screamed, tearing off her surgical mask so he could see her face.
The commotion instantly woke Elijah from his deep sleep on the sofa.
Elijah jumped to his feet, blinking in confusion as he processed the violent scene unfolding in his son’s room.
Before Elijah could intervene, Cassandra rushed into the room accompanied by two armed hospital security guards.
Cassandra pointed a trembling finger directly at Naomi.
"Look, Elijah, she sneaked back into the hospital to finish killing Toby!" Cassandra shrieked hysterically.
Doctor Harrison scrambled to his feet, adjusting his torn coat and pointing at Naomi as well.
"She attacked me when I caught her trying to inject the boy with this!" Doctor Harrison lied, pointing to the syringe hidden under the bed.
Elijah looked at Naomi, his eyes wide with horror and absolute betrayal.
"I was trying to stop him, Elijah, they are working together!" Naomi pleaded, holding her hands up in surrender.
Elijah looked at the syringe on the floor, then at the terrified face of his crying son.
The manipulation was too perfectly executed for a grieving father to see through in the heat of the moment.
"Lock the doors and call the police immediately," Elijah ordered the security guards, his voice shaking with fury.

The guards grabbed Naomi roughly, forcing her arms behind her back and snapping heavy plastic zip-ties around her wrists.
Cassandra stepped closer to Elijah, wrapping her arms around him and burying a wicked, triumphant smile into his chest.
