Chapter 8 - The Final Stand

Silas held a detonator in his left hand and a pistol in his right.

He had anticipated the escape route perfectly.

He told me the house was wired with C4, and he would blow it all.

He demanded I step off the boat and hand over my daughters.

He said Isabelle owed him a debt, and the girls would pay for it.

I stood between my family and the monster who destroyed our lives.

I told Grace to get ready to hit the throttle.

I dropped my rifle and raised my hands in surrender.

I walked slowly down the wooden dock toward Silas.

He smiled, thinking he had finally broken me.

He lowered his pistol slightly as I approached.

I didn't stop walking.

When I was two feet away, I lunged forward and grabbed his wrist.

I twisted his arm until the bone snapped loudly in the quiet night.

He screamed and dropped the pistol into the water.

I punched him in the throat, driving him down to his knees.

He gasped for air, his hand still clenching the detonator tightly.

He wheezed and laughed, pressing his thumb against the red button.

A gunshot rang out through the cold night air.

Silas’s eyes went wide, and he collapsed onto the wooden planks.

I turned around, breathless and covered in bruises.

Grace was standing on the back of the boat.

She was holding my dropped rifle with shaking hands.
