Chapter 3 - The Broken Trust

I stepped into the doorway and aimed at the center of his back.
I asked Marcus what he was looking for.
He froze, his hands hovering over a hidden floor safe.
He didn't bother reaching for his gun.
He slowly turned around and pulled off his black mask.
His face was covered in a fresh layer of sweat.
He told me he was trying to protect the family.
I fired a warning shot that shattered the mirror inches from his head.
I demanded to know exactly what he meant by that.
Marcus fell to his knees and begged me to listen.
He said Isabelle wasn't the innocent woman I thought she was.
He claimed she had been stealing ledgers and giving them to the Feds.
My blood ran completely cold.
I told him he was a liar and a dead man.
He reached into his tactical vest slowly.
I almost pulled the trigger again.
He tossed a small silver flash drive onto the carpet.
He said the proof was on that drive.
He also said he wasn't the one who killed her.
I picked up the drive and kept my gun leveled at his chest.
Before I could ask another question, the window shattered behind him.

A sniper bullet ripped through his throat.
Marcus collapsed onto the floor, dead before he even stopped bleeding.
