Chapter 2 - The Enemy Within

The backup generators hummed to life, casting long shadows down the hallway.
I kept my gun aimed squarely at Enzo.
I asked him how a rogue vehicle bypassed our million-dollar security gate.
He swore on his mother's grave that he had no idea.
I wanted to believe him.
But in my world, trust usually ended with a bullet to the back of the head.
I ordered him to disarm himself and slide his weapon across the floor.
He hesitated for a fraction of a second before complying.
I zip-tied his hands to a heavy metal pipe running along the wall.
I couldn't take any chances until my daughters were safe.
I sprinted back to the kitchen, my heart hammering against my ribs.
Grace had moved the girls into the reinforced walk-in freezer.
She stood in front of the heavy steel door holding a carving knife.
Her hands were shaking violently, but she didn't step aside.
I lowered my weapon and told her I was taking them to the panic room.
Olivia finally looked at me and nodded.
We moved quietly through the darkened dining room.
Suddenly, a massive crash echoed from the floor above us.
Someone was tearing apart my master bedroom.
I signaled for Grace to keep moving toward the basement stairs.
I crept up the grand staircase alone.
I peaked around the corner and saw a man wearing a tactical mask searching my closet.
May you like
I recognized the combat boots he was wearing.
They belonged to my head of security, Marcus.
