Chapter 8 - The Shipyard

Daria demanded a physical trade at the abandoned shipping yards on the edge of the city.
If I did not bring the original medical files and the murder confession, she would execute the innocent teenager.
Vance was furious, demanding that we call in a full federal tactical assault on the location.
I refused, knowing Daria would kill the hostage the absolute second she saw a police helicopter.
I told Vance that I was going to walk into the shipyard completely alone to make the trade.
Catherine begged me not to go, tears streaming down her face as she held our beautiful daughter.
I kissed them both, promising that I would come back to them, even though I knew it was a suicide mission.
I drove the armored SUV to the desolate shipping yards, stepping out into the freezing, torrential rain.
Daria was standing on an elevated metal catwalk, surrounded by a dozen heavily armed mercenaries.
The terrified teenage girl was tied to a chair near the edge of the platform, crying silently in the rain.
I held the thick manila envelope high in the air, demanding that she release the hostage immediately.
Daria laughed, ordering two of her men to walk down the metal stairs and retrieve the documents.
I handed the envelope over, watching as they delivered it to my mother's waiting hands.
She inspected the papers, smiled triumphantly, and ordered her guards to cut the teenager loose.
The girl ran sobbing down the stairs and disappeared into the maze of shipping containers.
Daria looked down at me with absolute disgust, pulling a silver pistol from her designer coat.
She loudly declared that I was a massive disappointment to the family legacy and ordered her men to execute me.

The mercenaries raised their assault rifles, aiming a dozen red lasers directly at my chest.
Suddenly, a massive cargo crane swung violently across the yard, dropping a multi-ton shipping container directly onto the catwalk.
