Chapter 5 - The Ambush

The sound of heavy tactical tires crunching on gravel echoed through the quiet mountain forest.

Vance immediately killed all the lights in the cabin and handed me a suppressed assault rifle.

I told Catherine to take Penelope and hide inside the reinforced storm cellar beneath the kitchen rug.

She kissed me quickly, her eyes filled with tears, before disappearing into the dark cellar.

Dozens of red laser sights began piercing through the cabin windows, painting the interior walls.

A loud megaphone shattered the silence, ordering us to surrender the woman and the child immediately.

The voice belonged to the security chief I had shot earlier, and he sounded eager for revenge.

Vance and I took defensive positions behind the heavy oak dining table.

The mercenaries did not wait for a response, unleashing a relentless barrage of automatic gunfire into the cabin.

Wood splinters and shattered glass rained down on us as the walls were torn to shreds.

We returned fire, taking out the floodlights and plunging the assault team into total darkness.

I used my thermal scope to systematically neutralize three mercenaries attempting to breach the front door.

Vance threw a flashbang grenade out the broken window, temporarily blinding the remaining attackers.

We realized the mercenary team was too large to hold off indefinitely with our limited ammunition.

I told Vance we had to create a massive distraction to give Catherine a chance to escape.

I grabbed a spare propane tank from the kitchen and rolled it toward the front porch.

Just as I prepared to shoot the tank, the floorboards beneath my feet violently gave way.
