Chapter 6 - The Tunnels

I crashed through the rotting wooden floor and landed hard in a damp, underground dirt tunnel.

Vance dropped down right behind me, coughing and brushing dust off his tactical vest.

I realized this was an old bootlegger tunnel that connected the cellar to the nearby riverbank.

We crawled frantically through the narrow passage, guided only by the faint glow of my tactical flashlight.

I found Catherine waiting at the end of the tunnel, clutching Penelope tightly to her chest.

We emerged into the freezing night air just as a massive explosion consumed the cabin behind us.

The propane tank had detonated, eliminating the remaining mercenaries and destroying the evidence of our escape.

We hiked three miles through the dense woods until we reached a hidden secondary vehicle Vance had stashed.

We drove back toward the city, knowing our window to retrieve the dental records was rapidly closing.

We arrived at the central bank just before dawn, disguised as a commercial cleaning crew.

Vance disabled the primary alarm system while I used the thermal drill to bypass the vault's heavy locking mechanism.

We stepped into the massive steel vault and quickly located Dr. Weston’s private safety deposit box.

I pried the metal door open and pulled out a thick manila envelope containing the original x-rays and DNA files.

I opened the folder to verify the documents, but a secondary piece of paper caught my eye.

It was a handwritten confession from Dr. Weston, detailing a crime far worse than faking a death.

The letter explicitly outlined how Daria had systematically poisoned my father over a period of six months.

My mother was not just a kidnapper and a fraud, she was a cold-blooded murderer.

The vault door suddenly slammed shut behind us with a deafening, metallic clang.
