Chapter 7 - The Hostage Trade

We were completely trapped inside the airtight steel vault with a limited supply of oxygen.

A digital screen on the inside of the vault door suddenly flickered to life.

Daria’s face appeared on the monitor, looking impeccably dressed and terrifyingly calm.

She smiled and thanked me for retrieving the final piece of incriminating evidence for her.

She explained that she had monitored Dr. Weston’s accounts and knew I would eventually attempt this heist.

She offered to open the vault door and let Catherine and the baby live, but only if I surrendered the documents and my life.

She promised to give Catherine a new identity and enough money to disappear forever.

I looked at Catherine, knowing my mother was absolutely ruthless enough to let us all suffocate in this metal box.

Catherine grabbed my hand and fiercely whispered that we were not making any deals with a monster.

Vance pulled a block of military-grade plastic explosives from his bag, intending to blow the electronic locking pins.

He warned us that the blast in such a confined space would likely rupture our eardrums and cause severe concussions.

We hid behind a row of metal lockboxes and covered our heads as Vance triggered the detonator.

The explosion shook the entire building, blowing the heavy steel door completely off its reinforced hinges.

We stumbled out of the smoking vault, completely disoriented and bleeding from our ears.

Daria’s corrupt police officers were waiting in the lobby, but they were stunned by the massive blast.

We fought our way through the smoke, using the element of surprise to disarm the guards and escape into the street.

We finally had the undeniable proof to destroy Daria’s empire, but my phone suddenly rang with an unknown number.

I answered the call, and Daria’s voice coldly informed me that she had just kidnapped the FBI Director’s teenage daughter.
