Chapter 9 - The Crossfire

Riona did not wait for Roland to finish his villainous speech.
She exhaled slowly to steady her trembling hands and pulled the heavy trigger of the sniper rifle.
The high-caliber bullet tore through the foggy air and shattered Roland's right shoulder.
Roland screamed in agony, dropping his handgun and entirely losing his grip on Anel.
"Run, Anel!" Aldrich roared at the top of his lungs.
The little boy sprinted desperately across the wet pavement toward his father.
The mercenaries instantly opened fire, turning the shipping yard into a deafening warzone.
Aldrich tackled Anel aggressively to the ground, shielding the boy with his own body as bullets sparked off the asphalt.
Riona fired rapidly from the crane, taking down three mercenaries in quick succession.
Aldrich drew his weapon and accurately returned fire, dropping the men trying to flank their position.
Roland stumbled backward toward a metal crate, clutching his violently bleeding shoulder.
He looked at Aldrich with pure, unadulterated hatred and raised his left hand.
He still held the electronic detonator in a tight, desperate grip.
A stray bullet suddenly ricocheted off a steel beam and struck Aldrich directly in the chest.
Aldrich collapsed heavily onto the pavement, his gun slipping from his weakened fingers.
Riona screamed his name from the crane, her heart breaking into a million irreparable pieces.

Roland smiled wickedly, pressed the red button on the detonator, and dropped it onto the ground.
A small red light on the device began to beep rapidly, counting down the final ten seconds to total annihilation.
