Chapter 6 - The Ransom

Riona screamed her son's name, rushing frantically toward the broken window.

Aldrich grabbed his gun and vaulted through the shattered glass into the dark alley.

He returned two minutes later, his face pale and his eyes completely devoid of mercy.

"They took him," Aldrich said, his voice dropping to a terrifying, deadly register.

Riona collapsed to her knees, sobbing uncontrollably into her hands.

The burner phone in Aldrich's pocket suddenly began vibrating violently.

He answered the call and placed it on speakerphone so Riona could hear.

"You have a very handsome son, Aldrich," Roland Vain's mocking voice echoed through the small room.

"If you touch a single hair on his head, I will burn this entire city to the ground," Aldrich promised coldly.

"Save the dramatic threats, boss," Roland laughed maliciously.

"I want Cosmo's black ledger in exactly one hour, or the boy takes a swim in the river," Roland demanded.

The line went dead, leaving a suffocating silence in the basement.

"We don't even have the ledger yet," Aldrich said, pacing the floor like a caged predator.

"I know exactly where it is," Riona interjected, wiping her tears and standing up with fierce determination.

"Cosmo mailed me a cryptic letter right before I left the city," she explained quickly.

"The ledger isn't locked in a bank vault or hidden in the estate," she revealed.

"He buried it inside the silk lining of his own coffin to ensure his enemies could never find it."

Aldrich stared at her in absolute shock as he realized they had to break into his grandfather's crypt.
