Chapter 7 - The Mausoleum

They stole a car from the industrial district and drove recklessly toward the Mount Royal Cemetery.
The massive iron gates of the graveyard were locked tight for the night.
Aldrich crashed the stolen sedan directly through the rusted chains, not caring about the noise.
They sprinted through the rows of ancient tombstones toward the grand Ferrante family mausoleum.
Aldrich used his heavy gun to shatter the intricate padlock on the marble doors.
Inside, Cosmo Ferrante's ornate wooden casket rested silently on a stone pedestal.
"Forgive me, old man," Aldrich muttered as he used a crowbar to pry the heavy lid open.
Riona did not hesitate, reaching her hands directly into the white silk lining of the coffin.
She felt a hard rectangular object hidden near the pillow and ripped the fabric apart.
She pulled out a thick, leather-bound black notebook.
"We have it," Riona cried out in relief, clutching the evidence to her chest.
"Let me see it," Aldrich said, turning on a small flashlight to inspect the pages.
He flipped through the meticulously handwritten records of decades of criminal activity.
He stopped suddenly on the very last page, his face draining of all color.
Riona looked over his shoulder to read the final entry written in Cosmo's distinct handwriting.
The ledger explicitly stated that Roland Vain had already been paid five million dollars from a secret account.

The payment was specifically authorized by Roland's true employer for the assassination of both Aldrich and his heir.
Roland was never going to make a trade for the ledger because he was hired to kill Anel no matter what.
