Chapter 3 - The Safehouse

Aldrich instantly tackled Riona and Anel to the ground as a hail of bullets shredded the vestry walls.
He covered their bodies entirely with his massive frame, acting as a human shield against the flying debris.
"Stay down!" he roared over the chaotic screaming of the wedding guests outside the room.
He pulled a heavy pistol from his tailored suit jacket and kicked the vestry door open.
"We move to the armored car right now," he ordered, pulling Riona roughly to her feet.
He scooped Anel into his left arm, holding the child tightly against his chest while pointing his gun down the hallway.
They sprinted through the smoke-filled corridor, stepping over the shattered remains of the church pews.
His remaining loyal men provided covering fire as they breached the side alley exit.
Aldrich threw Riona and Anel into the back seat of a heavily fortified black SUV.
He climbed into the passenger seat and ordered his driver to get them to the underground safehouse.
The tires squealed violently against the pavement as the heavy vehicle tore through the streets of Montreal.
Riona wrapped her arms protectively around a terrified Anel, trying to calm his racing heart.
"Who is shooting at us?" Riona demanded to know.
"I have enemies, Riona," Aldrich replied coldly, checking the magazine of his weapon.
"You have a traitor," she corrected him sharply.
"The only reason I came back to this city was to retrieve your grandfather's hidden ledger," she confessed.
"The ledger proves that Roland Vain framed me eight years ago to cover his own embezzlement," she revealed.

The driver of the SUV suddenly slammed hard on the brakes in the middle of a deserted tunnel.
The driver slowly turned around, pointing a silenced handgun directly at Aldrich's head.
