Chapter 5 - The Escape

The sound of the approaching death squad forced them to sprint faster into the darkness.
Aldrich navigated the complex labyrinth from pure memory, guiding them toward an emergency surface hatch.
"Climb up," he instructed Riona, lifting her effortlessly toward the rusty iron ladder.
They emerged into a deserted alleyway behind a dilapidated warehouse in the industrial district.
Aldrich led them into a hidden basement apartment he kept strictly off the syndicate's official books.
He locked the heavy steel door and collapsed onto a dusty sofa, gripping his bleeding ribcage.
Riona rushed to the kitchen, grabbing a towel and pressing it firmly against his fresh wound.
"You are bleeding badly," she said, her hands trembling as they touched his skin for the first time in years.
"It is just a graze," he lied, wincing in pain as she applied heavy pressure.
Anel sat quietly in the corner armchair, watching his parents interact with wide, observant eyes.
"I am so sorry I didn't believe you eight years ago," Aldrich whispered, his voice cracking with genuine remorse.
"Roland forged bank records, and I was too blinded by my own paranoia to ask you for the truth," he admitted.
Riona felt a tear slide down her cheek, realizing the immense tragedy of their lost years together.
"I never stopped loving you," she confessed, her voice thick with suppressed emotion.
Aldrich reached up and gently wiped the tear from her face with his thumb.
Before they could bridge the final gap between them, the safehouse's perimeter alarm began screaming loudly.

Riona spun around to grab Anel from the armchair.
The chair was completely empty, and the back window of the apartment was shattered wide open.
