Chapter 4 - The Betrayal

"Roland sends his regards, boss," the corrupt driver sneered with his finger tight on the trigger.

Aldrich moved with a terrifying speed that the human eye could barely track.

He slapped the barrel of the gun upward just as a silenced bullet shattered the sunroof.

Aldrich drove his fist brutally into the driver's throat, incapacitating the traitor in a single blow.

The SUV careened wildly out of control before violently crashing into the concrete wall of the tunnel.

Airbags deployed with a loud crack, filling the cabin with thick white smoke.

Riona coughed violently, frantically checking to make sure Anel was unharmed in the back seat.

"We have to go on foot," Aldrich grunted, kicking his jammed door open with his heavy boot.

He dragged the unconscious driver out of the vehicle and grabbed the man's extra ammunition.

They fled into a maze of dark, abandoned maintenance tunnels beneath the city.

Anel held tightly to Aldrich's large hand, struggling to keep up with their rapid pace.

"Are you a bad man?" Anel asked innocently, looking up at the blood on Aldrich's knuckles.

Aldrich stopped walking, the question piercing deeper than any bullet ever could.

"I am a man who does bad things to protect the people I love," Aldrich answered honestly.

He looked at Riona, silently silently pleading for her to understand the depth of his regret.

"Roland knew you were coming back for the ledger," Aldrich deduced, his mind racing to put the pieces together.

"He wants to destroy the evidence and wipe out my bloodline to take over the syndicate," he explained grimly.

A sudden, chilling echo of heavy combat boots resonated down the concrete tunnel behind them.
