Chapter 8 - The True Enemy

Ethan and I rushed to my laptop and plugged in the security drive.
We watched the grainy black-and-white footage of the dark alley behind the restaurant.
A tall figure wearing a baseball cap approached my parked car and picked the lock.
The person quickly slid the bloody knife under the passenger seat and walked away.
The figure briefly looked up at the streetlamp, revealing their face to the camera.
It was not Lauren.
It was David, Ethan’s longtime business partner and closest friend in the world.
I gasped in horror as Ethan stared at the screen with absolute betrayal in his eyes.
We realized David had been using Lauren’s firm to destroy me from the very beginning.
David wanted to ruin my life so he could force Ethan out during the scandal and take over the holding company.
We finally knew the truth, but taking the tape to the corrupt police was too risky.
We needed to trap David in public where he could not buy his way out.
The annual city charity gala was being held that exact night at a grand hotel.
Ethan and I dressed in formal wear and walked into the crowded ballroom together.
I spotted David standing near the ice sculpture, sipping a martini and looking incredibly smug.
I walked right up to him and quietly showed him a screenshot of the video on my phone.
I whispered that the FBI was already waiting in the lobby to arrest him.
David did not panic, beg for mercy, or try to run away.

He simply smiled a cold, evil smile and pulled his own phone from his pocket.
He showed me a live video feed of my beautiful flagship restaurant engulfed in massive flames.
