Chapter 3 - The Health Inspector

The manager dropped the clipboard on the floor and ran out of the office.
I turned slowly to face my husband.
Ethan looked just as horrified as I felt.
He swore to me that he had absolutely no idea who was targeting us from inside his firm.
I wanted to believe him, but a cold seed of doubt had been planted in my mind.
We realized Lauren was not acting alone in this vicious corporate attack.
She was working with a traitor inside Ethan’s own boardroom.
I decided I could not afford to play the victim.
I spent the next forty-eight hours scrubbing every inch of the restaurant myself.
I hired a completely new kitchen staff and installed hidden security cameras above every prep station.
I was determined to pass the final health inspection and save my lease.
Friday night arrived, bringing the busiest dinner rush of the entire month.
The dining room was packed with important food bloggers and local celebrities.
Right in the middle of service, the chief health inspector walked through the front doors.
He completely ignored the hostess and marched straight into my kitchen.
I followed him nervously as he shined his flashlight into every corner.
The kitchen was completely flawless and sparkling clean.
I smiled, knowing we were going to easily pass the inspection.
The inspector walked over to a sealed bin of organic flour in the corner of the room.
He opened the heavy plastic lid and reached inside with a gloved hand.
My heart completely stopped when he pulled out a large, rotting dead rat.
The entire kitchen staff gasped in sheer horror.

The inspector immediately pulled a bright red closure sticker from his pocket.
He slapped it right onto my kitchen door and ordered everyone to evacuate the building.
