Chapter 9 - The Broken Mind

Olivia shrank back into the dark corner, completely terrified of the strangers in her cell.
Nine years of heavy, forced medication and total isolation had entirely shattered her memories.
Ethan slowly reached out his hand, tears streaming freely down his weathered cheeks.
He softly sang the lullaby he used to sing to Lucy when she was a baby.
Olivia tilted her head, a tiny flicker of recognition briefly flashing in her empty eyes.
Lucy knelt beside her mother and gently placed her warm hand over Olivia’s trembling fingers.
She showed Olivia the old photograph of their happy family from ten years ago.
Olivia traced the faces in the picture, her breathing becoming rapid and heavy.
A sudden, deafening siren began to blare throughout the entire lighthouse structure.
Valerie had installed a dead-man’s switch that triggered a massive self-destruct sequence upon her death.
The concrete walls of the underground cell began to violently crack under immense pressure.
Freezing ocean water aggressively sprayed through the widening fissures in the stone.
Ethan scooped his fragile wife completely into his strong arms without a second thought.
He ordered Lucy to run up the stairs as fast as her legs could possibly carry her.
They scrambled up the spiral staircase as the subterranean cell rapidly flooded behind them.
They burst into the main room just as the lower levels completely collapsed into the sea.
They ran out of the lighthouse and sprinted wildly toward the dense tree line.
The entire ancient tower exploded in a massive, spectacular ball of bright orange fire.
The shockwave knocked them all safely into the soft, muddy grass of the forest.

Ethan held his family tightly, fully believing they had finally survived the endless nightmare.
Then, dozens of blinding police spotlights suddenly illuminated the entire forest clearing.
