Chapter 7 - The Father's Sacrifice

Bright orange sparks flew violently into the dark room as a heavy plasma torch cut through the bunker's reinforced door. Ricardo quickly armed himself with a heavy military assault rifle and tossed a spare, loaded pistol directly to his son. He looked deeply into Alejandro's terrified eyes, expressing decades of heavy regret in a single, painful glance. Ricardo stated firmly that he had failed to protect his family once, but he would absolutely not fail them again. He strictly ordered Alejandro to take Valeria and the baby immediately through the secondary escape tunnel leading directly to the river. Alejandro absolutely refused to leave his newly discovered father behind to die in the dark. Ricardo grabbed his son roughly by the collar and aggressively shoved him toward the dark, narrow escape hatch. He yelled fiercely that Alejandro's only duty now was to completely protect the innocent child in his arms. The heavy steel door finally gave way entirely, crashing violently onto the cold concrete floor. Heavily armed mercenaries immediately flooded rapidly into the bunker, guns blazing wildly in every possible direction. Ricardo instantly opened fire, providing a massive, deafening wall of covering bullets as Alejandro dragged Valeria into the dark tunnel. Alejandro looked back one final, heartbreaking time just as a brutal barrage of bullets violently struck his father's chest. Ricardo fell heavily to his knees, smiling a bloody, triumphant smile as he pressed a button to detonate a secondary explosive charge strapped to the ceiling. The entire concrete bunker collapsed violently in a massive cloud of dust and debris, completely burying the mercenaries and his incredibly brave father. Alejandro choked back his bitter tears and safely carried his exhausted wife and newborn son through the damp darkness. They finally emerged hours later near the muddy, overgrown banks of the dark river on the quiet outskirts of the city. A small, entirely unmarked speedboat was waiting exactly where Ricardo had promised it would be. Alejandro gently placed Valeria and the sleeping baby securely into the boat, completely exhausted and heavily covered in grime. He quickly started the heavy outboard motor, steering them carefully toward a secret safe house hidden deep in the dense jungle. For two long days, they hid in absolute, terrifying silence, patiently allowing Valeria to slowly recover her fading strength. Alejandro genuinely believed they had finally vanished entirely from Esther's incredibly deadly radar. But on the early morning of the third day, Alejandro walked outside to gather fresh drinking water from the rain barrels. He found a glossy black envelope nailed violently to the wooden front door of their hidden cabin. Inside was a single, crystal-clear photograph of Valeria's elderly parents tied securely to chairs in a dark basement.
