Chapter 6 - The Ghost Network

Thick, choking black smoke completely filled the narrow industrial alleyway. The mercenaries scattered in absolute panic as the burning van illuminated the chaotic, terrifying scene. Alejandro grabbed Valeria tightly, completely confused by the sudden, highly strategic massive explosion. A tall figure emerged from the dense smoke, wearing heavy tactical gear and a dark military gas mask. The stranger grabbed Alejandro's arm and aggressively pulled him toward a hidden maintenance hatch in the cracked ground. Alejandro hesitated for a mere fraction of a second, but Valeria's agonizing screams made the desperate decision for him. They climbed quickly down the rusty iron ladder into the cold, damp darkness of the city's old sewer system. The tactical stranger led them expertly through a maze of dark tunnels until they reached a secure, heavily fortified underground bunker. The stranger finally removed the dark gas mask, revealing a weathered face Alejandro had never expected to see again. It was his own father, Ricardo Aranda. Ricardo was supposed to have died violently in a tragic private plane crash over a decade ago. Alejandro stared at the older man in complete, paralyzing shock, utterly unable to form a single coherent word. Ricardo rushed to a sterile medical cot in the corner of the room and strictly ordered Alejandro to lay Valeria down. The bunker was secretly equipped as a fully functional, highly advanced underground trauma ward. Ricardo explained rapidly that he had faked his own death to successfully escape Esther's murderous ambition. He had spent the last ten long years building a ghost network to finally completely destroy her entirely corrupt empire. He revealed that he had been closely tracking Valeria's terrifying captivity and had personally sent Mateo to rescue them. Ricardo quickly washed his hands and prepared a sterile delivery tray to save his fragile grandchild. Valeria gripped Alejandro's hand so hard her knuckles turned completely pale white. She pushed with all her remaining strength, screaming as the blinding, agonizing pain overtook her completely exhausted body. After ten terrifying minutes, the beautiful, sharp sound of a crying baby echoed off the cold concrete walls. Ricardo wrapped the tiny, premature infant securely in a warm blanket and handed him very carefully to Alejandro. Alejandro wept openly as he looked down lovingly at his beautiful, perfect newborn son. But the deeply joyous moment was violently interrupted by a blaring red alarm siren on the bunker's central security console. Ricardo checked the security monitor and his aged face instantly drained of all remaining color. The mercenaries had expertly tracked their thermal signatures through the tunnels and were currently cutting forcefully through the heavy steel door.
