Chapter 5 - The Shattered Escape

A deafening gunshot echoed loudly over the roar of the massive SUV engine. The heavy caliber bullet struck Mateo directly in the right shoulder, violently tearing through flesh and bone. The journalist screamed in pure agony as his bloody hands completely slipped off the steering wheel. The heavy armored SUV lost control instantly, swerving wildly across four lanes of busy morning traffic. Alejandro unbuckled his seatbelt and desperately lunged forward to aggressively grab the spinning wheel. He fought with all his might to keep the massive vehicle from flipping dangerously over the concrete median. The SUV violently side-swiped a large delivery truck, tearing the passenger door completely off its steel hinges. They miraculously managed to stay upright, loudly skidding into a deserted, crumbling industrial alleyway. Mateo slumped heavily over the center console, bleeding profusely and rapidly losing consciousness. Alejandro knew absolutely that they could not outrun the heavily armed pursuit vans on blown, shredded tires. He quickly dragged Valeria out of the ruined vehicle and helped her hide safely behind a rusted shipping container. He checked the stolen shotgun, realizing with absolute dread that he only had two lethal shells remaining. The three black vans screeched into the narrow alleyway, completely blocking their only possible exit. Dozens of armed men poured quickly out of the vehicles, moving with terrifying, highly coordinated military precision. Leading the deadly squad was none other than Doña Esther herself, stepping elegantly out of a luxury sedan. She looked completely immaculate in her tailored designer suit, completely unbothered by the brutal violence surrounding her. She held a golden megaphone to her lips and addressed her son with a sickeningly sweet, maternal tone. She promised that if Alejandro simply handed over the woman, he could easily return to his life of immense wealth and absolute power. Alejandro stepped out from behind the rusted container, aiming the shotgun directly at his mother's cold heart. He loudly declared that he would rather die completely penniless in the dirt than spend another second as her son. Esther sighed dramatically, a look of profound, theatrical disappointment crossing her cold features. She slowly raised her elegant hand to signal the armed mercenaries to completely open fire on her own flesh and blood. Before she could even drop her hand, a massive explosion violently rocked the entire alleyway. A hidden explosive charge had detonated directly beneath the lead pursuit van, sending it flipping wildly into the air.
