Chapter 4 - The Lockdown

Ethan sprinted out of the recovery room like a man completely possessed by pure adrenaline.

He ran down the sterile white corridors far faster than he had ever run in his entire life.

When he burst violently through the doors of the neonatal unit, the nurses were screaming in total panic.

The digital displays on the premature incubators were flashing a terrifying, bright red warning light.

Ethan forcefully shoved a frozen medical technician aside and manually reconnected the heavy oxygen valves.

He watched in agonizing, suffocating suspense as the tiny chests of his children began to slowly rise and fall again.

The babies gradually regained their healthy pink color, pulling themselves miraculously back from the edge of death.

He furiously demanded to know exactly who had been standing near the incubators in the last five minutes.

A terrified young nurse pointed with a shaking hand toward the emergency exit stairwell.

She stammered that a strange man wearing a blue maintenance uniform had just been checking the main gas lines.

Ethan instantly smashed the glass on the wall and pulled the fire alarm to trigger a complete hospital lockdown.

Heavy magnetic steel doors slammed shut across every single floor and corridor of the massive building.

He ensured that absolutely no one could enter or leave the medical center without his direct, personal authorization.

He ordered four armed hospital security guards to stand entirely in front of the neonatal unit doors.

He then walked slowly back to Hannah's private room, his fists clenched tight in pure, murderous rage.

He told her about the horrific sabotage and promised upon his life that it would never happen again.

Hannah wept softly into her hands, completely blaming herself for bringing this massive danger into their lives.

Ethan reached into the deep pocket of his bloodstained surgical scrubs and pulled out a small velvet box.

He had carried this beautiful diamond ring every single day for five incredibly painful years.

He dropped to one knee beside her hospital bed and looked deeply into her tear-filled eyes.

He begged her to marry him right now so he could grant her absolute legal protection against his mother.

Before Hannah could even process the incredible proposal, a massive, deafening crash echoed from the hallway outside.

The thick glass window of Hannah's recovery room shattered violently into a thousand dangerous pieces.
