Chapter 13 - The Burning Truth

The deafening roar of the explosion violently shook the very foundations of the maximum-security federal penitentiary.

Thick, acrid black smoke began pouring aggressively through the ventilation shafts into the visitation room.

Ethan instantly realized The Architect was not just targeting his home; the invisible mastermind was completely tying up loose ends.

Victoria began screaming in absolute, unadulterated terror as the prison guards attempted to drag her back toward the burning cell block.

"Ethan, please!" she shrieked, pressing her trembling hands desperately against the thick bulletproof glass.

Ethan stood entirely paralyzed for a crucial second, torn between leaving his murderous mother to burn or acting on his profound medical oath to save human life.

He grabbed a heavy metal fire extinguisher from the wall bracket and violently smashed it against the electronic locking mechanism of the visitation door.

The heavy steel door swung open, and he sprinted into the chaotic, smoke-filled corridor, coughing heavily.

He found Victoria cowering in a corner, abandoned by the guards who had fled the rapidly spreading inferno.

He grabbed her arm roughly, pulling her entirely against her will toward the emergency exit stairwell.

"Keep your head down and run," he ordered fiercely, completely ignoring the intense heat blistering his exposed skin.

They burst through the heavy exterior doors and collapsed onto the freezing concrete courtyard, gasping desperately for clean air.

Federal tactical teams were already swarming the prison perimeter, securing the area against the massive terrorist attack.

Victoria lay on the concrete, coughing violently and staring up at the son she had tried so desperately to ruin.

"Why did you save me?" she rasped, her voice completely broken by smoke and sheer disbelief.

"Because I am a doctor, not a monster like you," Ethan replied coldly, wiping soot from his eyes.

"Now, tell me the name of the man trying to slaughter my family."

Victoria looked at the burning prison, finally realizing that her arrogant silence would absolutely guarantee her brutal murder.

"His name is Silas Thorne," Victoria whispered, the name sounding like a toxic curse on her lips.

"Thirty-five years ago, your father completely bankrupted Silas's legitimate logistics company to build the Caldwell empire."

"Silas lost absolutely everything. His company, his wife, and his mind."

Ethan felt a cold, terrifying dread settling heavily into his chest.

"My father didn't die in an accidental hit-and-run, did he?" Ethan asked, the pieces finally aligning.

"No," Victoria confessed, tears of genuine fear finally spilling down her soot-stained cheeks.

"Silas ran him down in the street. I covered it up to protect the company's stock value, and I paid Silas to completely disappear."

"He didn't disappear," Ethan realized aloud, the horrifying magnitude of the threat becoming absolutely clear.

"He spent three decades quietly building a shadow empire just to utterly destroy the Caldwell bloodline when the time was right."

An FBI tactical agent approached them, heavily armed and demanding Ethan return to his secure vehicle immediately.

Ethan walked away from his mother, entirely leaving her to face the brutal reality of her lifelong, toxic deception.

He pulled out his cell phone, dialing the head of his private security team guarding Hannah at the estate.

The phone rang endlessly, the dreadful silence on the other end echoing loudly in his ears.

When someone finally answered, it was not his trusted security chief.

"Your mother talks entirely too much, Doctor Caldwell," Silas Thorne's chilling voice whispered over the line.
