Chapter 15 - The Devil's Bargain

Ethan kept his weapon raised, the laser sight aimed perfectly squarely at Silas Thorne’s chest.
"Step away from the valve, Silas," Ethan commanded, his voice cold and entirely devoid of fear.
"You have absolutely no leverage. The police are already on their way."
Silas chuckled softly, a harsh, grating sound that echoed unpleasantly in the concrete basement.
"I own the police commissioner, Ethan. Nobody is coming to save you tonight," Silas replied confidently.
Silas rested his hand heavily on the red release valve, ready to flood the panic room with deadly, invisible gas.
"Your father took my wife from me," Silas sneered, his eyes burning with decades of toxic, unresolved grief.
"He ruined my company, and the stress caused my pregnant wife to suffer a fatal hemorrhage."
"I am going to make you watch your own wife and children suffocate, exactly as I watched my family die."
Ethan’s brilliant medical mind raced incredibly fast, calculating the exact pressure required to turn the heavy valve.
"My father was a monster, Silas," Ethan agreed softly, slowly lowering his weapon a fraction of an inch to feign surrender.
"He destroyed your life, and my mother covered it up. They both deserve to burn in hell."
Silas looked slightly confused by Ethan’s sudden agreement, his grip on the heavy steel wrench loosening slightly.
"But Hannah and the babies had absolutely nothing to do with it," Ethan continued, taking a slow, calculated step forward.
"If you kill them, you become the exact same monster my father was."
"I don't care about morality, Doctor," Silas spat angrily. "I care about absolute, undeniable revenge."
Ethan suddenly dropped his pistol completely onto the concrete floor, kicking it far away into the dark corner.
"Then take your revenge on me," Ethan offered fiercely, standing completely unarmed in front of the ruthless mastermind.
"I am the last true heir to the Caldwell empire. Kill me, and your vengeance is perfectly complete."
"Let Hannah and the twins walk out of this house alive, and you can have my life right now."
Silas stared at the wealthy, arrogant doctor who was willingly sacrificing his own life without a single moment of hesitation.
"A noble, pathetic gesture," Silas smiled cruelly, pulling a heavy, suppressed handgun from his tailored overcoat.
He aimed the deadly weapon directly at Ethan’s unprotected forehead.
"I accept your terms, Doctor Caldwell. But I am still going to kill your family anyway."
Silas pulled the trigger.
The deafening crack echoed through the basement, but Ethan did not fall.
Instead, Silas Thorne collapsed violently to the concrete floor, clutching his shattered shoulder in sheer, absolute agony.

Behind Silas, standing in the shadows of the basement staircase, was Hannah.
She was holding a heavy security shotgun, her hands completely steady and her eyes blazing with fierce, maternal fury.
