Chapter 5 - The Mastermind

The reality of the situation crashed down on Danielle like a physical blow to her chest.

Her entire empire, her sense of safety, and the people she trusted most were all deeply compromised by a conspiracy she never saw coming.

She walked over to the communications panel, determined to use the hardwired emergency line to contact the British Prime Minister directly.

"The phone lines are physically cut from the outside, but I can re-route the signal through the encrypted satellite uplink," Ethan offered, his fingers flying across the keyboard.

Danielle watched him work, realizing that this boy possessed a level of genius that completely surpassed standard academic achievement.

"Your adoptive mother, who was she?" Danielle asked softly, needing to understand how her son had survived in the shadows.

"Dr. Sarah Jenkins," Ethan replied, finally pausing his typing to look at her.

Danielle gasped, recognizing the name of the lead geneticist who had vanished from her ex-husband's controversial biotech firm fifteen years ago.

"She took me to protect me from the genetic trials he wanted to run on his own flesh and blood," Ethan stated grimly.

Before Danielle could process the horrific truth about her ex-husband, the computer monitor flashed bright green, signaling an open connection.

"I bypassed the local jammer, you can make the call now," Ethan said, stepping back from the microphone.

Danielle pressed the transmission button, prepared to beg the authorities for an immediate tactical rescue team.

But before she could speak a single word, a smooth, terrifyingly familiar voice echoed through the panic room speakers.

"I must admit, Danielle, I am thoroughly impressed that you managed to lock yourselves in the vault," Richard's voice purred through the static.

Danielle froze, realizing that her ex-husband wasn't just orchestrating this from afar, but had completely hijacked her own emergency network.

"Hello, Danielle," Richard continued with a dark chuckle.

"I see you finally found our missing little asset, but I am afraid his time has officially run out."
