Chapter 13 - Into the Shadows

The private jet tore through the storm clouds over the English Channel, completely flying under the radar. Danielle had activated her deepest contingency protocols, burning millions of dollars in untraceable crypto to secure a ghost flight to a black-site safehouse in the Swiss Alps.
Inside the luxurious cabin, the atmosphere was thick with tension and the sharp smell of medical alcohol. Sarah was unconscious on the leather sofa, heavily sedated after Danielle had meticulously stitched the bullet wound in her leg.
Julian sat across the aisle, expertly packing his own injured shoulder with gauze. He worked in silence, his face an unreadable mask of pure endurance.
Danielle rocked a sleeping Liam, her eyes burning with exhaustion and a fury she could barely contain. "If you are twenty-two, how did you pass for a sixteen-year-old boy?" she finally asked, breaking the bitter silence.
Julian didn't look up from his bandages. "Malnutrition, chemical growth inhibitors, and highly specialized training," he answered flatly. "The Syndicate recruits orphans. They mold us to fit whatever profile the contract requires. I was chosen for this assignment because my bone structure naturally mirrored your ex-husband's."
"You played me perfectly," Danielle said, her voice dripping with venom. "You let me believe my child survived. You let me weep for you."
Julian finally stopped his ministrations, his piercing green eyes locking onto hers. "It wasn't supposed to go this far," he admitted, a slight tremor in his voice betraying his iron discipline. "I was supposed to extract the data and vanish from the plane. But Marcus acted early. He forced my hand."
"And now you expect me to trust an assassin?"
"I expect you to trust a survivor," Julian countered sharply. "Richard has likely already made a deal with MI6 or the CIA. He will trade his illegal biological weapons research for absolute immunity. By morning, he will be a free man with the full backing of Western intelligence."
Danielle felt her blood run cold. If Richard had government protection, her billions of dollars would mean absolutely nothing. She would be hunted to the ends of the earth.
"The Syndicate will hunt him too," Julian continued, pulling a clean black shirt over his scarred torso. "They don't like loose ends, and Richard betrayed them. We are in the middle of a war between a global shadow organization and a sociopathic billionaire. And Liam is the prize."

"Then what is our play?" Danielle asked, her corporate ruthlessness finally eclipsing her maternal panic.
Julian pulled a sleek, encrypted laptop from his bag, the screen illuminating his sharp features. "We don't run. We set a trap. We give Richard exactly what he wants, and we watch him burn."
