Chapter 15 - The Winter Fortress

The Swiss Alps were a jagged, unforgiving landscape of blinding white snow and lethal drops. Danielle's safehouse was carved directly into the side of a granite mountain, a brutalist masterpiece of concrete and steel originally designed to withstand a nuclear blast.
Inside the sprawling underground complex, the air was warm and smelled of expensive cedar and high-grade weapon oil. Danielle stood in the massive armory, watching Julian disassemble and clean a heavy sniper rifle with mechanical precision.
"They will come from the air," Julian muttered, his eyes glued to the weapon's firing pin. "The mountain roads are snowed in. It will be helicopters. Black Hawks, most likely, if Richard got his immunity deal."
Danielle shivered, though the room was perfectly climate-controlled. She walked over to the monitors displaying the exterior thermal cameras. Nothing but blowing snow and absolute isolation.
"Julian," she started, her voice surprisingly gentle. "If we survive this... what happens to you? The Syndicate will never stop hunting you for going rogue."
Julian paused, a shadow crossing his face. "I don't have a future, Danielle. My life ended the day the Syndicate bought me from that orphanage. My only objective now is to make sure Liam doesn't grow up in a cage like I did."
Before Danielle could respond, Sarah limped into the armory, leaning heavily on a metal cane. Her face was deathly pale, but her eyes were sharp.
"I've been analyzing the partial data Julian downloaded," Sarah announced, holding up a digital tablet. "Richard's formula is fundamentally flawed. It causes massive cellular mutations after seventy-two hours. He knows this. He needs Liam's specific stem cells to act as a stabilizing agent."
"He wants to drain my baby to fix his poison," Danielle growled, a murderous rage boiling in her veins.
"Worse," Sarah corrected grimly. "Liam wouldn't survive the extraction process. Richard intends to sacrifice his second son to become immortal."
A deafening, mechanical klaxon suddenly blared through the bunker, bathing the concrete walls in flashing crimson light.
Julian dropped the cleaning rag and smoothly locked the bolt of the sniper rifle into place. He looked at the main security monitor. Three military-grade gunships were hovering just above the tree line, dropping dozens of heavily armed operatives into the deep snow.

"They aren't just MI6," Julian said, his eyes narrowing as he recognized the tactical gear of the soldiers outside. "Those are Syndicate death squads. Richard brought the devil right to our front door."
Danielle pulled a sleek, customized Glock from the armory wall, her hands finally steady. "Then let's send them all to hell."
