Chapter 9 - The Corrupt Badge

The approaching headlights grew brighter, casting long, terrifying shadows across the empty highway.

Clara frantically tried to restart the dead truck, but the engine only clicked uselessly.

We held our breath, praying the approaching vehicle belonged to someone who could help us.

A white SUV with flashing red and blue lights pulled up directly behind our broken truck.

A wave of massive relief washed over my entire body.

It was the local county sheriff, arriving to save us from the nightmare.

The sheriff stepped out of his vehicle, shining a bright flashlight directly into our shattered windshield.

"Is everyone alright in there?" the sheriff asked, keeping his hand resting casually on his holstered weapon.

Clara pushed the driver's door open and stepped out onto the asphalt, raising her hands to show she was unarmed.

She quickly explained that our stepfather had tried to murder us and set our house on fire.

The sheriff listened silently, nodding slowly as he walked closer to Clara.

"You mean Arthur told the truth about you kidnapping his boys?" the sheriff asked in a cold, menacing tone.

Clara froze, her expression shifting from relief to utter confusion.

"What are you talking about? He tried to kill us!" Clara yelled desperately.

The sheriff unclipped the safety strap on his holster and drew his service weapon.

He pointed the gun directly at Clara's chest.

"Arthur pays me a lot of money to make sure his local problems disappear completely," the sheriff stated flatly.

He ordered Clara to get on her knees and place her hands behind her head.

My heart sank into my stomach as I realized Arthur's claim about having the law on his side was completely true.

We had escaped a burning house and a shotgun only to be executed by a corrupt cop on an empty road.

Liam squeezed my hand, his eyes wide with absolute despair.

The sheriff walked over to the passenger side of the truck and aimed his flashlight at us.

"It is a real shame you boys couldn't just learn to obey your father," the sheriff sneered.

He raised his weapon, pointing the barrel directly at my forehead.

Before he could pull the trigger, the dark sky above us was suddenly illuminated by the blinding spotlight of a massive helicopter.
