Chapter 8 - The Gunshot

Arthur pumped the shotgun, the metallic clack echoing loudly in the cold night air.

He raised the barrel, aiming it directly at Clara's head through the thin glass of the windshield.

"Nobody is leaving this property alive," Arthur screamed, his face covered in dark, wet blood.

Clara did not hesitate or panic.

She slammed her foot down on the gas pedal, throwing the heavy truck directly into drive.

The engine roared as the truck lurched aggressively forward, tires spinning wildly in the thick mud.

Arthur fired a single, deafening shot.

The heavy buckshot shattered the windshield into a million pieces, raining sharp glass all over the front seat.

I threw my body over Liam, bracing for the deadly impact of the bullets.

But the shot had gone just inches high, destroying the roof liner instead of hitting us.

Before Arthur could pump the weapon for a second shot, the massive steel bumper of the truck slammed directly into his chest.

The violent impact threw him backward into the air, and he crashed heavily into the trunk of a massive oak tree.

The shotgun flew from his hands, disappearing into the dense, dark brush.

Clara did not stop to check if he was dead or alive.

She kept her foot pinned to the floor, steering the damaged truck wildly down the long, winding dirt driveway.

Cold wind whipped fiercely through the shattered windshield, stinging our faces as we sped away from the burning house.

I looked over at Clara, whose hands were gripping the steering wheel so tightly her knuckles were completely white.

"Are you guys okay?" she yelled over the roaring wind and the sound of the failing engine.

Liam and I nodded, still shaking violently from the adrenaline and sheer terror.

We finally reached the paved county highway, speeding toward the safety of the nearest town.

I looked back through the rear window, watching the massive plume of orange smoke rising from our destroyed home.

We had actually survived the night, and Arthur was finally out of our lives forever.

But just as I turned back around to face the road, the truck's engine completely died with a loud, mechanical grinding noise.

The shotgun blast had pierced the radiator, and the engine block had finally seized from overheating.

The truck coasted to a slow, pathetic stop in the dead center of the pitch-black, deserted highway.

We were stranded miles away from civilization, sitting ducks in a broken vehicle.

Then, the blinding headlights of an approaching vehicle appeared in the distance, speeding rapidly toward us.
