Chapter 3 - The Hidden Truth

The sound of the basement door locking echoed loudly through the silent house.
Arthur’s heavy boots marched back up the stairs, moving with terrifying purpose.
He did not come back into our bedroom.
Instead, he grabbed the handle to our door, pulled it shut, and slid the heavy exterior deadbolt into place.
We were completely locked inside our own room.
Liam and I sat in the darkness, listening to Arthur’s footsteps fade as he walked down the hall to his office.
My heart was hammering against my ribs so hard I thought it might actually break through my chest.
Liam whispered that we needed to find a way out right now before Arthur came back for us.
I agreed, but our shared cast made moving around the room a slow and agonizing process.
We managed to crawl over to the bedroom window, hoping we could unlatch it and scream for help.
When we tried to lift the glass, we realized Arthur had screwed the wooden frame completely shut from the outside.
We were trapped inside a perfectly designed cage.
I slammed my fist against the floorboards in absolute frustration.
When my hand hit the wood, a hollow, unnatural sound echoed from beneath the floor.
Liam and I looked at each other, instantly realizing that one of the floorboards was loose.
We used a metal ruler from our desk to pry the old wooden plank upward.
Hidden in the dusty space between the floor joists was a thick, waterproof lockbox.
It was not locked, so I popped the metal latch open and pulled out a stack of documents.
The papers were financial records belonging to our mother, who had died in a tragic car accident three years ago.
Liam shined a small flashlight on the very last document in the stack.
It was a massive life insurance and trust fund policy set up for us by our late grandfather.
The document clearly stated that the funds were completely inaccessible until our eighteenth birthday.
I looked at the digital clock on our nightstand, which read eleven forty-five.
Our eighteenth birthday was exactly fifteen minutes away.
Arthur was not just an abusive tyrant who enjoyed controlling us.

He had been waiting patiently for the exact moment he could legally claim our massive inheritance as our sole guardian.
Suddenly, the distinct, overwhelming smell of gasoline began to drift under our bedroom door.
