Chapter 6 - The Detonation

I stared at the blinking red numbers on the explosive device, pure adrenaline flooding my veins.

We did not have time to run back up the stairs or crawl out the garage door.

"Get behind the concrete pillar!" I screamed at Liam.

We launched ourselves across the cold basement floor, diving violently behind a thick structural support column.

We covered our heads with our arms and curled our bodies tightly together just as the timer hit zero.

The explosion was absolutely deafening.

A massive shockwave ripped through the basement, shattering the wooden floor joists directly above us.

Debris rained down in the darkness, and the smell of ruptured gas and smoke filled the tight space.

The blast blew a massive hole through the side of the foundation, exposing the basement to the cold night air.

My ears were ringing endlessly, but I could feel Liam squeezing my hand tightly to signal he was alive.

We were covered in thick gray dust, but the concrete pillar had miraculously shielded us from the deadly shrapnel.

We dragged ourselves out from behind the column and crawled toward the jagged hole in the foundation.

We squeezed through the broken concrete blocks and tumbled out onto the wet grass of the backyard.

The house behind us was fully engulfed in raging, uncontrollable flames.

We lay on the ground, coughing violently and trying to pull clean air into our burning lungs.

I looked down the long dirt driveway and saw the taillights of Arthur’s truck glowing in the distance.

He had parked near the edge of the woods, likely preparing to dump Clara's body in the deep ravine.

I told Liam that we had to stop him before he drove away forever.

We pulled ourselves up using a wooden fence post, bearing the agonizing weight of our shared cast.

We limped as fast as we physically could toward the dark tree line, using the cover of the dense bushes.

When we reached the edge of the woods, we saw Arthur standing near the open tailgate of his truck.

He was holding a heavy steel crowbar, staring down at a tarp bundled in the truck bed.

We crept closer, intending to grab a heavy rock to strike him from behind.

But as we stepped on a dry branch, it snapped loudly, echoing in the quiet woods.

Arthur spun around instantly, his eyes locking directly onto us with a look of pure, demonic rage.

"You two just refuse to die, don't you?" he snarled, raising the heavy iron crowbar.
