Chapter 9 - The Final Stand

Jean stood in the cramped cabin, her eyes burning with pure, unadulterated hatred.

"You were always such a pathetic, simple man," she spat over the roar of the engine.

She cocked the hammer of her gun, preparing to end my life right there.

I did not have a weapon in my hand, but I had the strength of a man who worked the lumber mills.

I lunged forward, grabbing her wrist and violently twisting the gun away from my face.

A shot fired into the metal ceiling, deafening both of us in the small space.

I slammed my shoulder into her chest, pinning her hard against the heavy steel control panel.

The switching engine was picking up speed, hurtling dangerously down the rusted tracks.

Jean clawed viciously at my face, screaming that I was ruining everything she had built.

I managed to pry the weapon from her fingers and threw it out the open cabin window.

Through the front glass, I saw the tracks ending at a massive concrete barricade set up by the FBI.

"It is over, Jean!" I yelled, bracing myself against the heavy metal console.

The massive train violently crashed into the concrete wall with an explosive, earth-shattering impact.

The sheer force of the collision threw Jean entirely through the open cabin doorway.

She tumbled down the steep gravel embankment, landing heavily in the dirt below.

I held onto Nivea, surviving the crash thanks to the heavy steel frame of the engine.

I climbed out of the wreckage and walked slowly down the embankment toward Jean.

She was badly injured, clutching her broken leg, but she was still smiling.

She looked up at me and laughed, a cruel, echoing sound in the quiet night.

"The buyer already transferred the money, Frank," she whispered wickedly.

"They will never, ever stop hunting that child."
