Chapter 8 - The Rail Yard

Sarah cried out in pain and collapsed onto the floorboard of the SUV.

I grabbed Nivea and pulled Sarah out of the vehicle, dragging her behind the heavy steel train wheels.

A barrage of heavy gunfire erupted from the tree line, tearing the SUV to shreds.

"They brought a small army," Sarah gasped, clutching her bleeding shoulder.

Through the darkness, three armored vehicles aggressively smashed through the chain-link gates.

Jean stepped out of the lead vehicle, holding a megaphone in her hand.

"There is nowhere left to run, Frank!" her voice boomed across the empty yard.

She promised that if I handed over the baby, she would let me walk away alive.

I knew she was lying, and I was not going to surrender my daughter.

I looked at Sarah, who nodded weakly and handed me her spare magazine.

"I will provide covering fire," Sarah whispered, raising her weapon over the steel wheels.

I wrapped Nivea tightly against my chest and bolted toward a nearby switching engine.

Sarah opened fire, forcing Jean's mercenaries to duck for cover behind their armored cars.

Bullets sparked wildly against the rusted metal around me as I ran.

I climbed into the cabin of the old switching engine and desperately searched the controls.

My grandfather used to operate these trains, and I remembered how to hotwire the ignition panel.

The massive diesel engine roared to life with a deafening, terrifying rumble.

I slammed the heavy throttle forward, intending to crash the train directly into their vehicles.

As the train slowly lurched forward, the cabin door suddenly swung open.

Jean pulled herself into the moving engine, pointing her gun directly at my head.
