Chapter 5 - The Fire

I threw my weight against the heavy iron gate, but it did not budge.

Silas chuckled darkly from the other side of the bars.

"Nothing personal, son," the old watchman said as he keyed his radio.

I could hear Jean’s voice crackle through the speaker, asking for his location.

I looked frantically around the cramped underground bunker for a way out.

There was an old, rusted ventilation shaft leading up to the surface.

I grabbed a heavy steel wrench from a nearby workbench.

I smashed the wrench against the padlock on the gate, hoping to break it.

The metal sparked, but the lock remained completely intact.

Silas laughed and began pouring a large red canister of gasoline onto the floor outside the cell.

"If you try to break out, I will burn you out," he threatened.

He lit a match and tossed it onto the soaked concrete.

A massive wall of bright orange flames instantly erupted between us.

Thick, toxic black smoke began pouring into my tiny, locked cell.

Nivea started coughing violently, struggling to breathe in the suffocating air.

I knew I had exactly one minute to escape before we both suffocated.

I swung the heavy steel wrench at the crumbling brick wall supporting the ventilation shaft.

I hit it again and again, ignoring the searing heat blistering my skin.

The old bricks finally gave way, collapsing into a pile of dust and rubble.

I squeezed through the narrow opening, holding Nivea tightly against my chest.

We emerged into the cool night air just as the underground bunker exploded below us.

The blast knocked Silas completely off his feet, trapping him in his own fire.

I ran into the woods, leaving the burning lumber mill far behind.

When I stopped to catch my breath, I noticed something strange in the moonlight.

There was a tiny, intricate barcode tattooed on the bottom of my daughter's heel.
