Chapter 2 - The Escape

The sound of the gunshot echoed loudly over the roar of the truck engine.
Shards of glass rained down on the empty passenger seat beside me.
I kept my foot pressed hard against the accelerator, steering wildly down the mountain road.
Nivea started crying again, startled by the deafening noise.
"I have got you, baby," I promised, my voice shaking with pure adrenaline.
I knew I could not go back to our house ever again.
I also knew I could not trust the local police department in Boone.
Jean’s uncle was the county sheriff, and he had always covered up her mistakes.
If I walked into that station, Nivea would be handed right back to her.
I drove toward the interstate, planning to cross the state line into Tennessee.
As the sun fully set, I pulled into an abandoned gas station to check on my daughter.
I gently unzipped her diaper bag to find a clean bottle of formula.
My fingers brushed against something hard and metallic hidden beneath the diapers.
I pulled it out and held it up in the dim light of the dashboard.
It was a small, blinking GPS tracker.
Jean had been tracking our baby's location this entire time.
I frantically rolled down my window and hurled the device into the dark woods.
I thought I was finally safe, but then my truck radio crackled to life.
The local emergency broadcast system suddenly interrupted the music.
