Chapter 3 - The Mill

I was officially a wanted fugitive in my own hometown.

Every highway patrol car in the state would be looking for my license plate.

I needed cash, a different vehicle, and a secure place to hide until morning.

There was only one place I knew better than anyone else.

I drove through the back roads until I reached the massive, dark lumber mill where I worked.

I parked my truck behind a towering pile of pine logs and grabbed Nivea.

The mill was completely silent, filled with the heavy scent of sawdust and motor oil.

I carried my daughter quietly into the main office building to break into the emergency petty cash box.

When I pushed the heavy oak door open, a terrible smell hit my lungs.

My boss, Mr. Henderson, was slumped over his wooden desk.

A pool of dark blood had soaked into the paperwork beneath his head.

Someone had already been here, and they had executed him.

I backed away slowly, my heart hammering violently against my ribs.

Suddenly, the sweeping beams of heavy flashlights pierced through the warehouse windows.

I heard the heavy crunch of tactical boots marching across the gravel parking lot.

I ducked behind a stack of freshly cut maple boards, holding my breath.

A group of heavily armed men walked into the mill, scanning the shadows.

Leading them was Jean, holding a radio transmitter in her hand.

"Search every inch of this building," she commanded the mercenaries.

"He does not leave here alive, and the baby comes back to me."
