Chapter 7 - The Interrogation

The EMT walked into the examination room and locked the heavy door.

She pulled off her medical jacket to reveal an FBI badge clipped to her belt.

"My name is Agent Sarah Jenkins," she said, her voice strictly professional.

She explained that she had intercepted the 911 call I made from the park.

She had posed as an EMT to secure the baby because she knew local law enforcement was corrupt.

"We have been building a case against Jean for over two years," Sarah told me.

She said the trash can was a known dead-drop location for the syndicate's local couriers.

Jean had planned to fake a home invasion to cover up the baby's disappearance.

"We need your help to finally take her down," Sarah insisted.

She wanted me to text Jean and offer to trade the baby for a massive cash payout.

It was the only way to lure her out of her heavily guarded compound.

I looked at Nivea sleeping peacefully on the examination table.

I was terrified, but I knew we would never be safe until Jean was locked away forever.

I pulled out my phone and sent a message to the woman who used to be my wife.

I demanded one million dollars and instructed her to meet me at the abandoned rail yard.

Jean replied less than a minute later, agreeing to the terms.

Sarah handed me a bulletproof vest and a loaded pistol.

We drove to the rail yard, parking the SUV behind a rusted, hollowed-out train car.

We waited in the silence, watching the gravel road for any sign of approaching headlights.

Suddenly, the side window of the SUV shattered violently inward.

A high-caliber sniper bullet struck Sarah directly in her armored shoulder.
