Chapter 2 - The Doctor Is In

The pediatrician closed the heavy wooden door behind him without making a sound.

He looked nothing like the frantic, helpful doctor who had treated Antonio on the plane.

His eyes were cold, calculating, and completely devoid of any medical empathy.

Evelyn instinctively grabbed a heavy brass candlestick from the nightstand.

"If you scream, I will put a bullet perfectly between your eyes," the doctor whispered.

Evelyn kept the candlestick raised, refusing to show the terror freezing her blood.

"You were never a doctor, were you?" she asked.

A terrifyingly calm smile spread across his face.

He explained that Antonio Vitelli was supposed to die quietly over the Atlantic Ocean.

The black medication case had contained a highly experimental, untraceable cardiac accelerant.

Evelyn had ruined a multi-million dollar assassination by intervening and providing pure oxygen.

"Marco brought me here to kill me?" Evelyn asked, her mind racing to connect the pieces.

The doctor chuckled softly and shook his head.

"Marco brought you here to protect you, which is exactly why he has to die next," the doctor said.

He raised the silenced pistol and pointed it directly at Evelyn's chest.

"I am truly sorry, Miss Foster, but no one gets to rewrite my prescriptions."

Before he could pull the trigger, a deafening explosion rocked the entire estate.

The blast shattered the bedroom window, sending shards of glass flying across the expensive Persian rug.

The doctor stumbled backward, momentarily blinded by a flash of orange fire from the courtyard.

Evelyn did not hesitate for a fraction of a second.

She swung the heavy brass candlestick with all her strength, striking the doctor across the temple.

He collapsed onto the floor, the gun slipping from his grip.

Evelyn scooped up the weapon and ran into the smoke-filled hallway.

The estate was under full siege, and heavily armed mercenaries were storming up the grand staircase.
