Chapter 5 - The Hospital Siege

I dropped the tablet on the bed and screamed for my father to check the incubator.

My father sprinted across the room and tore the blue blankets away from my sleeping son.

Hidden deep inside the fabric seam was a tiny, blinking red GPS transmitter.

My father crushed the device under his heavy military boot, but the damage was already done.

The blaring sound of the hospital's emergency lockdown alarms suddenly echoed through the hallways.

Heavy gunfire erupted in the lobby directly two floors below us.

The cartel mercenaries had tracked the signal and were breaching the hospital to take my son as leverage.

My father pulled his service weapon and pushed my hospital bed against the reinforced steel door.

He ordered my mother to take the baby and hide inside the attached concrete bathroom.

I ripped the intravenous lines from my arms and grabbed a heavy metal fire extinguisher from the wall.

I was completely exhausted and bleeding, but I was ready to kill anyone who touched my child.

The sound of tactical boots echoed loudly down our specific corridor.

My father aimed his weapon at the door, his finger resting perfectly on the trigger.

The heavy steel door violently shuddered as someone tried to kick it open from the outside.

A booming voice ordered us to step away from the door and surrender the infant.

My father fired three warning shots straight through the center of the heavy metal frame.

The attackers retreated momentarily, taking cover behind the nurse's station down the hall.

My father pulled out his radio to call for immediate military backup from the nearby base.

The radio emitted nothing but dead, heavy static.

The mercenaries had brought a localized signal jammer to cut off all our communications.

Suddenly, the shattered window of our hospital room burst entirely open.

A man dressed in black tactical gear swung into the room on a repelling rope.
