Chapter 6 - The Repossession

The ultimate public disgrace happened on a bright, sunny Tuesday morning in late January.
Sarah was hosting a small "sympathy brunch" with three of her remaining friends, trying to spin a narrative that Matthew had decided to take a sabbatical to focus on charity work. She was pouring mimosas when a massive, heavy-duty tow truck backed into their pristine driveway with a loud, rhythmic beeping.
Sarah dropped the champagne bottle. It shattered on the hardwood floor.
She ran to the front door, her friends trailing behind her in stunned silence. A man in a high-visibility vest was securing thick metal chains to the axles of both the Audi and Sarah’s leased Range Rover.
"What do you think you're doing?!" Sarah shrieked, running down the steps.
"Repossession order, ma'am," the driver said, handing her a clipboard without looking up. "Both leases are in default. Three missed payments. I need the keys, or I'm dragging them out in park."
"You can't do this! My neighbors are watching!" Sarah cried, looking frantically up and down the street. Curtains were parting. People were stepping out onto their porches.
"Bank doesn't care about your neighbors, ma'am."
Matthew walked out of the house, his shoulders slumped. Without a word, he reached into his pocket, pulled out both sets of key fobs, and handed them to the driver.
"Matthew!" Sarah screamed, hitting his chest. "Do something! Call your mother!"

"It's over, Sarah," Matthew whispered, his eyes hollow. "She's not coming to save us. She's gone."
The tow truck pulled away, taking the last remnants of their fake wealth with it. Sarah’s friends awkwardly gathered their coats and left, whispering frantically to one another. The social execution was complete.
