Chapter 4 - The Country Club Humiliation

By New Year's Eve, the financial infection had spread through Matthew and Sarah’s life with brutal speed.

Sarah, determined to keep up appearances, had insisted they attend the Oak Park Country Club's exclusive New Year's gala. It was the social event of the season, and Sarah had already bought a $3,000 designer gown for the occasion, charging it to a credit card she didn't know was completely maxed out.

They pulled up to the club in the Audi, handing the keys to the valet. Sarah looped her arm through Matthew's, flashing her brilliant, practiced smile to the other wealthy couples walking up the steps.

They reached the grand entrance, where the club manager, Mr. Harrison, stood with a tablet.

"Good evening, Mr. and Mrs. Thorne," Harrison said politely. But instead of stepping aside, he remained firmly planted in the doorway. "Could I speak with you privately for a moment?"

Sarah’s smile faltered. "We’re in a bit of a rush, Harrison. Our friends are at table four."

"I apologize, Mrs. Thorne, but you are not permitted to enter the premises," Harrison said, dropping his voice to a hushed tone, though the couples behind them could definitely hear. "Your membership dues are three months in arrears, and the credit card on file has been repeatedly declined. Until the $15,000 balance is settled, your membership is suspended."

Sarah’s face drained of color. "That… that's impossible. Matthew, tell him!"

Matthew stared at his shoes, feeling the burning gaze of the town's elite on the back of his neck. "There's a mix-up with our accountant," he mumbled. "We'll sort it out next week."

"I'm afraid club policy is strict," Harrison said, stepping back and gesturing toward the driveway. "Happy New Year."

Sarah turned and fled down the steps, tears of absolute humiliation ruining her makeup. She didn't wait for the valet. She walked out into the freezing night in her heels. Matthew chased after her, knowing that by tomorrow morning, the entire town would know they were broke.
