Chapter 1 - The Silence of the Morning

Evelyn Thorne sat at her kitchen island, the steam from her dark roast coffee curling into the cold morning air. Her phone, resting face up on the granite counter, vibrated relentlessly. The screen flashed a constant, desperate rhythm: Matthew Calling. Matthew Calling. Sarah Calling. Matthew Calling.

She did not reach for it. She simply took a slow, deliberate sip of her coffee. The flavor had never tasted so rich.

Miles away in Oak Park, the atmosphere was rapidly devolving into absolute chaos. Matthew paced the length of his vaulted living room, running his hands through his hair. His face was pale, his eyes bloodshot from a night of heavy drinking and sudden, terrifying sobriety.

"Call her again!" Sarah shrieked from the kitchen. She was clutching her phone, staring in horror at her banking app. "Matthew, I just tried to pay the caterer for the Boxing Day brunch tomorrow, and the card was declined. Declined! Do you know how humiliating that is?"

"I'm trying, Sarah! She's not answering!" Matthew yelled back, dialing his mother’s number for the twenty-ninth time. It went straight to voicemail.

He threw the phone onto the plush velvet sofa. For twelve years, his mother had been a silent, invisible safety net. He had treated her bank account like a magic well, drawing from it whenever his lavish lifestyle exceeded his actual income as a mid-tier marketing manager. He had convinced Sarah—and himself—that he was a self-made success.

"What do you mean, she cut us off?" Sarah's mother, Linda, walked down the stairs, tying her silk robe. She had overheard the screaming. "Matthew, what is going on with your finances?"

Matthew froze. The illusion he had so carefully crafted for his wealthy in-laws was cracking wide open. "It's just a bank error, Linda," he lied smoothly, though a bead of sweat rolled down his neck. "A temporary hold. My mother handles some of my trust distributions, and she must have pressed the wrong button."

"Well, tell her to un-press it," Sarah snapped, her eyes narrowing. "Or I swear to God, Matthew, I will cancel the country club gala."

Matthew walked into the garage, his chest tight with panic. He got into his leased Audi, slammed the door, and drove toward his mother's house. He was going to demand she fix this.
