Chapter 3 - The Audit

While Matthew panicked, Evelyn was moving with the precision of a military general.
On December 26th, at exactly 9:00 a.m., she sat in the polished oak boardroom of Sterling & Vance Financial Group. Across from her was Robert Vance, her longtime estate attorney and financial planner.
"You did the right thing, Evelyn," Robert said, adjusting his glasses as he reviewed the termination of the wire transfers. "I’ve been advising you to cut this parasitic cord for a decade. Matthew has drained nearly seven hundred thousand dollars from your retirement assets over the last twelve years."
Evelyn didn't flinch. "I know. I allowed it because I thought it was the only way to stay in my grandchildren's lives. But I see now that he only kept me around as an ATM. Robert, I want to lock down the rest of my estate."
Robert nodded, his pen poised over a legal pad. "What are your instructions?"
"I want my will completely restructured. Matthew is to receive absolutely nothing. Not a single cent, not the house, not a family heirloom."
"And the grandchildren?"
"Create an impenetrable, iron-clad trust for them," Evelyn instructed. "It will cover their college tuition, paid directly to the universities, and they will receive a modest stipend when they turn twenty-five. But under no circumstances is Matthew or Sarah to have any access, control, or oversight of those funds. If they try to contest it, the trust dissolves and the money goes to charity."

Robert smiled, a sharp, predatory grin. "It will be airtight, Evelyn. By the time I'm done, Matthew couldn't extract a dime from your estate if he had a team of federal lawyers."
Evelyn stood up, feeling a profound sense of liberation. The heavy burden of buying her son's affection was gone.
