Chapter 5 - Desperate Measures

The first week of January brought a reckoning that neither Matthew nor Sarah was prepared for.

With the private school tuition check bounced, the headmaster politely but firmly informed them that their children could not return for the spring semester. Sarah spent three days crying in her bedroom, devastated that her children would have to attend public school like "commoners."

Matthew’s business was the next to fall. He had been quietly borrowing from his company’s operating budget, assuming his mother's monthly transfer would cover the deficit before the quarterly audit. Without her money, his partners discovered the missing funds. He was unceremoniously fired, threatened with embezzlement charges if he didn't surrender his equity in the company immediately.

Desperate, Matthew drove to Evelyn’s house again. This time, he didn't knock. He stood at the end of the driveway and waited.

When Evelyn pulled out of the garage to head to the grocery store, Matthew stepped in front of her car. She hit the brakes, her expression hardening.

He walked up to the driver's side window. She rolled it down exactly two inches.

"Mom, you win," he said, his voice cracking. He looked terrible—unshaven, exhausted, defeated. "Sarah is threatening to leave me. I lost my job. We're going to lose the house. Please. I am begging you. Just a loan. I'll pay you back with interest."

Evelyn looked at him, searching for the little boy she had raised, the boy she had sacrificed so much for. But all she saw was a selfish man who only loved her when she was useful.

"You shut the door in my face on Christmas Eve, Matthew. You told me I was the wrong house. You laughed at me."

"I made a mistake!" he sobbed.

"No, you made a choice," Evelyn corrected him gently. "And now, you are living with the consequences of that choice. Goodbye, Matthew."

She rolled the window up, carefully steered around him, and drove away without checking her rearview mirror.
