Chapter 2 - The Locked Gate

When Matthew arrived at Evelyn’s modest, well-kept suburban home, he marched up the driveway with a sense of righteous anger. How dare she ruin Christmas morning? How dare she throw a tantrum just because she wasn't invited to a dinner party?
He reached for the spare key hidden under the ceramic frog planter on the porch.
It was gone.
Frowning, he grabbed the door handle and twisted. Locked. He pounded on the heavy wooden door. "Mom! Open up! We need to talk!"
He peered through the front window. The house was immaculate, but the living room was empty. Suddenly, he noticed a sleek, silver security camera mounted in the corner of the porch. It hadn't been there a week ago. A small red light blinked at him.
The security speaker crackled to life.
"You are trespassing," a cold, automated voice announced.
"Mom, stop playing games! Turn this off and let me in!" Matthew yelled at the camera. "Sarah is losing her mind! You have to transfer the mortgage payment, or it’s going to bounce on Tuesday!"
Evelyn’s voice came through the speaker. It wasn't angry. It was chillingly calm. "Wrong house, Matthew."
"Mom, please!" he begged, his anger suddenly dissolving into pure terror. "I was drunk last night. Sarah was stressed. I'm sorry, okay? Just put the money back in the account. The private school tuition is due next week. We’ll be ruined."
"Money cannot buy my seat at your table," Evelyn replied, repeating the exact words he had spoken the night before. "And apparently, my wallet can no longer fund your lifestyle. Happy holidays, Matthew."

The speaker clicked off. The red light went solid.
Matthew stood on the porch in the freezing cold, entirely alone. For the first time in his life, he realized there was no safety net beneath him. Just the hard, unforgiving ground.
