Chapter 9 - The Tarmac Interception

I slammed the heavy telephone receiver down and immediately rushed out of the detention center.

Marcus was waiting for me in the back of our armored SUV with his laptop open and his fingers flying across the keyboard.

"Ethan just confirmed my worst suspicions," I told Marcus as the driver sped aggressively onto the highway.

"Vanessa transferred the cartel's cash into a decentralized cryptocurrency wallet right before the FBI arrested her."

Marcus tapped into the federal database and pulled up Vanessa's current custody status.

"She posted a massive cash bail through a shell company ten minutes ago, and she is entirely off the grid," Marcus reported.

We knew exactly where a desperate fugitive with millions of dollars would go to escape federal jurisdiction.

The driver pushed the SUV to its absolute limits, racing toward the private aviation airstrip on the edge of the city.

We crashed through the chain-link security gates just as the sun began to set behind the dark mountains.

A sleek, unmarked private jet was already idling on the runway, its massive engines whining loudly.

Vanessa was sprinting across the tarmac, clutching a heavy metal briefcase filled with hard drives against her chest.

Our SUV violently skidded to a halt, completely blocking the aircraft's path to the runway.

Vanessa screamed in frustration and pulled a small, silver pistol from her designer jacket.

She aimed the weapon directly at my windshield, her hands shaking wildly with pure adrenaline and fear.

"Get out of my way, you old hag," Vanessa shrieked over the deafening roar of the jet engines.

Before Marcus could even draw his weapon, the cabin door of the private jet suddenly dropped open.

The pilot stepped out onto the metal stairs, wearing a dark aviator jacket and a calm, familiar smile.

Vanessa turned around, expecting the pilot to help her shoot her way out of the situation.

Instead, the pilot swiftly kicked the silver pistol completely out of her trembling hand.

Vanessa fell to the hard concrete in absolute shock as the pilot removed his sunglasses.

It was not a hired getaway pilot.

It was the ruthless cartel loan shark she had stolen from, and he had been waiting for her the entire time.
