Chapter 4 - The Boardroom Confrontation

The reality of their absolute ruin finally crashed down on Ethan's shoulders.

He and Vanessa were unceremoniously escorted off the property with nothing but two trash bags of cheap clothing.

They were forced to hail a dirty city taxi because their luxury vehicles had already been impounded by the trust.

Ethan refused to accept defeat and ordered the driver to take them to the central banking headquarters downtown.

He planned to use his long-standing corporate connections to secure an emergency, unsecured personal loan.

He marched past the reception desk, dragging a crying Vanessa behind him.

He burst into the executive boardroom, expecting to find his friendly loan officer waiting to help him.

Instead, the massive mahogany table was surrounded by entirely unfamiliar, stone-faced executives in dark suits.

Sitting at the absolute head of the table was a woman dressed in an immaculate, custom-tailored Chanel suit.

It was me.

The dried blood was completely gone, and a delicate silk scarf perfectly covered the bandage on my temple.

Ethan stopped dead in his tracks, his jaw dropping in pure, unadulterated shock.

"Mom?" he choked out, completely unable to reconcile the powerful woman before him with the helpless widow he had abused.

"You do not have an appointment, Ethan," I said, my voice completely devoid of any maternal warmth.

Vanessa pushed past him, her eyes burning with sheer greed and absolute desperation.

"You owe us half of this money," Vanessa screamed, pointing an accusing finger at my face.

"We took care of you for three years, and we are legally entitled to Arthur's estate."

Marcus, who was standing quietly by my side, stepped forward and handed Ethan a thick financial dossier.

"You are entitled to absolutely nothing," Marcus stated firmly.

"In fact, the forensic audit we conducted this morning revealed you embezzled two million dollars from the family logistics firm."

Ethan's face turned completely ghostly white.

"The FBI has already been notified of your wire fraud, Ethan," I said calmly.
