Chapter 1 - The Midnight Call

I pressed the cool screen of the black phone against my ear and waited.

The line clicked on the second ring.

"It is time, Marcus," I said, my voice steady despite the throbbing pain in my head.

My lawyer did not ask any unnecessary questions.

He had been waiting for this exact call for three years.

"I will activate the Ironclad Protocol immediately, Eleanor," Marcus replied in his crisp, professional tone.

"By sunrise, every asset tied to your son and his wife will be completely frozen."

I lowered the phone and walked into the small, cramped bathroom of the guest cottage.

The face staring back at me in the mirror was covered in dried blood and dirt.

I turned on the faucet and began washing away the physical evidence of my son's cruelty.

Ethan and Vanessa were still blasting loud music in the main house, entirely oblivious to the storm I had just unleashed.

They genuinely believed I was a helpless old widow with nowhere else to go.

My late husband, Arthur, had warned me that sudden wealth could corrupt even our own flesh and blood.

That was why we placed the twenty-one million dollars into a blind trust before he passed away.

I chose to live in this dilapidated cottage, driving a rusty car and wearing cheap clothes, purely to test Ethan's character.

He failed that test spectacularly tonight.

I packed a single leather overnight bag with my most essential documents and a change of clothes.

My phone buzzed on the bathroom counter.

It was a secure text message from Marcus.

"The bank accounts are officially locked, but we have a massive problem."

I stared at the screen, my heart beating slightly faster.

"Ethan just forged your signature on a commercial deed transfer."

He was not just trying to evict me to claim the land.

He had already sold the cottage property to a foreign development firm, and the bulldozers were scheduled to arrive at dawn.
