Chapter 6 - The Courtroom Ambush

The next morning, Ethan and Vanessa walked into the county courthouse with their heads held high.
They wore the best clothes they had salvaged from the trash bags, trying to project an image of desperate, concerned children.
They had filed the emergency conservatorship paperwork at dawn, completely confident in Vanessa's sinister plan.
They walked into the quiet courtroom, expecting to find a sympathetic judge ready to rule in their favor.
I was already sitting at the defendant's table with Marcus, wearing a calm and entirely unbothered expression.
The judge, a stern man with silver hair, adjusted his glasses and looked down at the documents Vanessa's lawyer had submitted.
"These are very serious allegations regarding your mother's mental capacity," the judge stated.
Ethan nodded pitifully, squeezing out a few fake tears for dramatic effect.
"It breaks my heart to see her mind deteriorate like this, Your Honor," Ethan lied smoothly.
"She has become violently paranoid, and she is destroying our family legacy."
The judge sighed heavily and picked up a separate, much thicker folder from his desk.
"It is incredibly fascinating that you bring up violent paranoia," the judge said coldly.
He motioned to the heavy wooden doors at the back of the courtroom.
The doors swung open, and the corrupt private investigator walked in, flanked by two heavily armed federal agents.
Vanessa gasped loudly, her manicured hands flying up to cover her pale mouth.
"This man confessed to forging the medical documents at your direct behest last night," the judge announced.
"He also provided audio recordings of your wife offering him a percentage of a stolen trust fund."
Ethan turned to Vanessa, his eyes wide with sheer, unadulterated panic.
Before Ethan could even attempt to speak, the federal agents marched directly down the aisle toward their table.
"Ethan Hayes, you are under arrest for conspiracy to commit fraud and grand larceny," the lead agent declared loudly.

The agent pulled out a pair of heavy steel handcuffs, but Vanessa suddenly shoved her chair backward and stood up.
"Wait," Vanessa screamed, pointing an accusing finger directly at her own husband's chest.
