Chapter 8 - The Shadow Operative

Peter stared down the dark barrel of the sniper rifle, completely blinded by the massive headlights of the black SUV.
He knew that if he pulled the trigger on his stolen handgun, the hidden sniper would easily blow his head off.
He slowly lowered his weapon to the concrete floor, refusing to die before he could ensure the complete safety of his family.
Reena laughed triumphantly and walked around the front of the vehicle, safely standing next to her heavily armed rescuer.
The driver door of the SUV opened, and a tall, imposing man wearing a tactical black suit stepped out into the warehouse.
The man did not look like a local corrupt cop, but rather a highly trained, expensive private military operative.
Reena smugly introduced the man as Silas, the brilliant architect behind her entire life insurance fraud operation.
Silas coldly ignored Reena’s praise, keeping his sharp, calculating eyes locked entirely on Peter and the dropped weapon.
He calmly demanded that Peter hand over the glass vial of poison and the original physical copies of the insurance documents.
Peter realized that Silas was the actual mastermind, and Reena was simply a useful idiot hired to execute Aaron's murder.
He reached into his pocket and slowly pulled out the vial, calculating his absolute best chance for survival.
He knew the children were still hiding safely outside, which meant he only needed to distract Silas long enough to escape.
Peter casually tossed the heavy metal lighter he had caught earlier directly into the massive puddle of gasoline at their feet.
The operative had assumed the lighter was already extinguished, completely failing to notice the tiny, lingering flame burning near the wick.
The gasoline instantly ignited into a massive, roaring wall of terrifying orange fire that separated Peter from the two criminals.
Reena screamed in absolute panic as the aggressive flames licked the expensive paint of the black SUV.
Silas cursed violently and raised his sniper rifle, attempting to shoot Peter through the dense, blinding smoke of the fire.
Peter dove behind a massive stack of rotting timber just as a high-caliber bullet shattered the concrete where he had been standing.
He crawled desperately on his hands and knees, using the thick smoke and the roaring sounds of the fire as his cover.
He scrambled out the side door of the burning warehouse, breathing heavily as the cool night air finally hit his face.
He frantically sprinted toward the rusted bulldozer near the tree line, praying to God that Drew and Lily were still there.
He found the two children huddled together in the dark mud, perfectly safe and waiting exactly where he had told them to go.
Peter scooped them both into his tired arms, intending to carry them deep into the forest to evade Silas completely.

Before he could take a single step toward the woods, a cold, heavy metal cylinder pressed firmly against the back of his neck.
Silas had somehow escaped the burning building and silently flanked their position in the dark weeds.
